You must have heard of hentai. If you have not, well, chances are you know no one who is into either manga or anime or both. That or your relationship with your kids borders on civility. But surely, you must have heard of either anime or manga or both? Okay, it's time to get to really know your kids better.
Simply put, manga refers to the Japanese art or style of comics or cartoons. Think wavy hair, big round eyes and Barbie-like figures (for both male and female characters but not all the time). Now if you animate (technically, to "present something using animation techniques or to present or record something in the form of a sequence of moving still images") manga, the result is what is called anime. Yes, now I see you nodding your head and itching to have that quality time with your child. But hold your horses, our discussion's not yet over. What about hentai? Trust me, you would want to know a little bit about hentai for it is something you would wish your child does NOT know about - until, well, he's 18.

Technically, hentai is a Japanese slang word that translates to "perverted" or "perversion". It is used to categorize, in the world of manga and anime, adult-oriented imagery of extreme and very graphic sexuality. Outside of Japan, the western world if you may, manga and anime are generally perceived as about graphic sex which is not the case because while such imagery exists (and for the the longest time actually) hentai titles only make up a small percentage of the total manga and anime output in Japan. To sum up, hentai is both anime and manga ideally for adults only.

Generally, hentai is classified into two. Those that feature heterosexual interactions and those that are about homosexual encounters. The latter is further subdivided into subgroups: the yuri, which refers to female homosexual pairings of bishojo "beautiful girl" and the yaoi, which highlights pairings of bishonen "beautiful boy" or biseinen "beautiful man". According to studies, both subgroups mostly cater to male audiences. Please note however that this classication is not all-ecompassing. That there are, um, other classifications as you will read below.
It is believed that hentai grew its roots in Japan during the Meiji period (1850s - early 1900s) when sexology, both as a science and psychology, was introduced. But it was in the latter that hentai as a term gained prominence - denoting psychological disorders and the paranormal. The word further evolved when it became associated with another technical term, the term being seiyoku or sexual desire. And as the interest in perverse sexuality or hentai seiyoku spread in medical texts, it was inevitable that it would find its way to popular literature. But the coming of WWII spelled death for the genre. Temporarily, that is.
The immediate postwar years saw the Japanese popular culture experience a sexual liberation of sort. The shaky governance allowed for decadence to be the name of the game and extreme public sexuality became as visible as it was acceptable. But it was not until the 1950s that "true" hentai came to fore again. The genre upped the ante of extreme heterosexualities by catering to the other markets that it did before - it also "celebrated" male and female homosexualities.
Fast-forward...
The hentai that is known today is a far cry from the hentai of the 1950s. With the developments in mass media, the hentai now is no longer an exclusive form of entertainment of the Japanese but of the world. And with its expansion came the widening of its scope enabling, hentai creators to identify markets according to fetishes and perversions. Yeah, there's hentai for those who are fascinated with overly endowed women (bakunyo) and hentai for those who have a thing for transsexuals (futanari). And you may throw in incest and bestiality and everything in between. And I mean everything.
I would like to post hentai pictures, videos or video game outtakes but that would be like asking some of you to push the wrong button below. And I think you have, by now, an idea of what they should look like. And besides, I might have used some words above that should've made you blush. No? Okay, stay with me on this one. I have seen some hentais and one of the most memorable is the one spoofing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. So I have described hentai above and it's your turn to imagine what Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs did!

One of my favorite forms of amine. Bleach, Ichigo Kurosaki is definitely FTW!! The Japanese are definitely better with character animation by far. Hentai is another form of Japanese human expression art (away from the fetish & perversion aspects -yuck-). But other than that, FTW!! Well done!

Oh yes, it all started with Pokemon for me. Then I watched all types of anime. Now my daughter has me hooked on a few different manga. I love Howl's Moving Castle, and of course I've seen Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Inu Yasha...I remember spending one rainy Saturday watching Naruto the entire day! Of manga, there are too many to name! My daughter did wait a while to tell me all about hentai. I don't think she knew about it in the beginning. LOL, see how my children have corrupted me! :D
Cris, have to tell you this quick story. My ex-stepdaughter wanted me to buy her some Manga or Anime comic books when I went to Tokyo. I went into a seven eleven and saw a pile of thick manga type comic books wrapped in plastic so I bought her one. When I showed it to my daughter here in Nanjing, she laughed hysterically, "Oh Mom! it's not uncommon thing in the Philippines. my children are aware of it - they are 19 and 16 years old. well, i do not know up to what extent but they are responsible people and i believe they also watch responsibly. we had discussed about it also years ago. one of the sunday (or saturday) tv shows even had a series about it.

On other hand you can download the whole series :D on line and read the manga as well. I on the other hand here in my home country have NO place to buy anime so i am stuck at watching them online or downloading them which is such a pitty! You'll love when the main character is going to be put to death for saving a human's life... Quite catchy and quite interesting, btw the last track i postest for you is very sad especially when the execution date is coming near. So hurry up and buy those anime stuff because you are missing a hell of happiness.
ps: Try the japanese version with subtitles because the Vocals in the english version are a little very ugh (not really but out of life not like the Jap version). Chris, there was an interesting project a few years back called, "Broken Saints", involving hentai like characters. It was a very interesting take on mysticism and world religion. The subject matter was quite adult. My son, 16 at the time, turned me on to it.

Anime is just a style of expression - the stories that you tell can be anything at all. In fact, many adults are into anime and it is not just a kid phenomenon. There are many anime with deep and interesting story-lines.
I remember this kind of cartoon got a lot of criticism here in the Philippines, as I've known one of these cartoons being shown here were cut short because of the issues. I just don't know though if I remember it correctly. =)

OMG! Bleach is definitely not good for my health! I slept at 2am last night and 1am the other night finishing the entire dvd boxset 1 and a few episodes of the second boxset! :O I had to summon "great spiritual energy" just to will myself to turn off the computer! Haha! :P
People always say it's better to watch anime in their original Japanese audio, but I prefer the English audio since reading subtitles distracts me. Plus I love the sexy voices of the English voice actors with their really clear enunciation... they're enough to make me fall in love! *sheepish grin* :D

I know what you mean about foreign languages though. I even attempted to learn Japanese when I was in college after seeing anime for the first time. Bought four "learn Japanese" books and a Japanese-English dictionary. But it's really hard learning a language when you have no one to practice speaking it with, and I gave up after a while. :( Oh what am I talking about, I couldn't even learn Chinese and I'm almost pure Chinese! Cris A - Thanks, I learned a lot. I am a Manga fan of sorts and like to visit exhibitions of Manga art. Last one I saw in Jakarta, Indonesia three years ago.
Now Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...I first saw this in Frankfurt, Germany in 1969. I thought Disney artists had actually drawn the whole thing up on the side...It really looked as if they had. Never saw it again till I was visiting a Go Go Bar in Balibago, Philippines about a year ago.

Well we're all adults here (I assume, or atleast hope xD); although this article doesn't go into discussing many of the "heavy-hitters" of the genre, it did actually give some historical backstory that I was proud to have read up on here, since I have a better understanding of where the market originated, and how and came to be. Personally I find no problem w/ hentai as it's more or less animated porn, and I don't have much a problem w/ that either. That being said, there's no way in hell anyone younger than 18 should be watching this sort of stuff (I'm 21), and I'd go one further and say that even if you clear the age fence, you need to make sure you're mentally capable of handling the imagery (animated, live-action w/e). You'd be somewhat surprised at how many people let entertainment imagery-of *any* media-shape their actions in the real world w/ real people, and then the news cartels unfairly blame the material of their feed instead of looking into why the individual was engaging in the material if they could not adequately realize that it was imaginary material to begin with.
So uh, yeah; I may watch a bit of hentai from time to time (and live-action porn as well, but I'm a young man x3) or atleast anime that has a somewhat high sexual quotient w/o classifying as hentai, but I understand at the end of the day that such is just mere imagery and I should-nor can I-ever allow it to blur my perceptions of the real world and real people. I'd actually like to stop viewing it and porn altogether but there'll likely always be that downtime where I might just watch a bit. Over time I'll probably drop viewing it altogether as it becomes an even smaller priority of my life than it is right now, but for now a little every now and then isn't bad so long as you're old enough, mature enough, and critical enough to know that if you try even some of that stuff in the 'real world', it means your ass.
Interestingly, I've done some research on hentai and learned that there was an anime-Urotsukidoji (Legend of the Overfiend)-that started the entire "tentacle" subgenre. I've never seen Urotsukidoji-and have heard that it's actually pretty violent (but from the clips I've seen on Youtube, in more of a shounen-like, DBZ/Yu Yu Hakushou-like fashion)-but it's often regarded for it's story. Reading a bit of the story myself, I thought it was pretty neat and complex for what could be called a hentai for the amount of sexual energy it has. It's probably the only quasi-porn/porn film that I've ever thought had a decent story, and someday I might watch it, just for the story. Honest; scout's honer xD.

Interesting hmmm discourse you posted! LOL Yeah, hentai is poles apart from live feature porn when you consider its "effect". Hentai feeds the curiosity and nothing more. No matter how graphic (though I stay away from "extremely controversial" themes), it's still animation and I must say I can't even start to imagine how one can seriously get addicted to the stuff. But then again, I'm no expert in human perversion.
I think I have seen "violent/sexually violent" forms you talked about and yes, the very graphic nature, most of the time, only comes second to the story that one might question the reason behind its inclusion in the first place. I guess the shock factor is something that should not be belittled commerce-wise.

I've watched one or two hentai titles with my wife in the past, but it was not for the sexuality aspect, it was for the humor! Many of these titles are SO ridiculous that it just makes you laugh.
A boy is possessed by some kind of sex demon, and when he starts having sex he transforms into the demon. The demon's... ahem... "private part" grows to be around 50 stories tall, it begins to glow, and then it slams down into the ground destroying an entire city block in downtown Tokyo. Seriously, that happened in one of the titles I watched... and it made me laugh for like 10 minutes.
But you should seriously be careful with the whole genre. You can just as easily see something that could result in nightmares, especially if you accidentally watch some of the "violent/sexually violent" types that were mentioned before. Some of them could scar an adult for life, let alone kids! o.O;;
In short, cartoons are not always for kids. And certain ones should practically be for nobody.

Hey this was great alot of info, i fell upon hentai a couple of months ago and was very intrigued to see how they used anime in such a grown up weird way, i think its rather funny.

Wow; Interesting to learn some background on hentai and yah I did wonder if both yuri and yaoi were targeted to a male audience, although I find that I run into a good number of female yaoi fans. Also, I think the comics are better than the games and the videos.
When you're an anime/manga fan, it's funny how outsiders don't know this stuff. :D It's like, heehee, they don't know about yuri. If I were to say anything here, your simple textbook explanation, while correct, kind of lacks entertainment/humor value as a hub. But it's good on the educational side of things.

Hentai is quite famous, and there are manga dedicated to it and anime too. Some people think it is very twisted, but the Japanese have a way of putting things out there, social and sexual mores that make us see it in a way that we might not have seen it before. Hentai tends in the west to be a form of kinky depiction of women (and men) and is associated with adult themes. Yet it look for all the world like kids entertainment, which it is not. That's one of the curious things about Hentai. Thanks for the interesting hub, Cris.

Good hub on the matter and I am surprised you were able to get through an entire article on the matter with out mentioning tentacles. Also, as with everything, you have extremes and less extremes, though most hentai is on the extreme side, there are some out there that actually have a decent story, either romantic or comedic, and are more akin to western movies that just have a sex scene in them.
Ugh. Bad Voice over work is bad. Couldn't even get through the trailer you linked.
