women who rock 'n rule: the greatest female-fronted rock groups and bands
78
This is not a vanity hub, but a money hub. Yes, I think I need to actually start thinking of the money-side of HubPages. Besides, I've been dramatic, dark, poetic, sarcastic and yes hateful in my last hubs so this is like a breath of fresh air -- oh not for me but for you. And it might bring the money rolling in. Might.
Be forewarned that this hub is not content-rich. If you want more meat to chew on, click on the links provided with the images below. Honestly, I was more concerned with topping Constant Walker's layouting genius than anything. But I think I miserably failed for all I could come up with is the campiest looking hub ever! Would you give me props for that?
So anyway, below is a compendium of the greatest (at least for me) rock groups and bands fronted by a female. I hope you enjoy the list as I enjoyed making it. Hell yeah!

Okay, before I clicked in I thought, "Here's the ones I'd choose, and if he misses any of them, I'm telling him so. Let's see what he's got!" You done did good. Except...
Janis Joplin -Big Brother and the Holding Company
You've got some of my favorites here, for sure. I think Annie Lennox's (post Eurythmics) "Why" is stunning. "No Doubt," "10,000 Maniacs" rock too, of course they all rock. I had a guitar pick (shark fin) that Joan Jett gave to a stewardess friend with her name on it. I still have it, but I used it so much I wore her name off. Duh. Good one!
Cris - you'll never believe it - I had Dreams playing just now!!
Great list and what I love as much is the artistic way you put the whole thing together! Black and white juxtaposed with the lipstick and shoes - just soooo classy.
How did Christoph get that guitar pick? *wonders* ....thereby hangs another tale??
Hi Cris, just dropping by. I was looking for Janis Joplin and Suzie Q. Am I showing my age?
Shalini: My friend the stewardess gave the Joan Jett guitar pick to me. That is all. No great story there.
Red lips and high heels...well!! Nice layout Chris! :P
I don't particularly enjoy many female voices but Fleetwood Mac rocks!
Enjoyed It Cris! Love Joan Jet, Heart, and ya, Janis Joplin would have been nice.
I think you did great with the layout, and you chose pretty pictures too, I was quite draw in. In fact... what's this hub about again? Laugh!
Great picks, Cris, I'll add one Spanish favorite that isn't widely known aound the world, but that... should be :-) Eva Amaral, voila!
Actually Cris, thanks to my daughter, I have listened to a lot of Spice Girls and the like too - each passing girl band, boy band :D
Christoph: whatever you say :D
Fabuloso list, great treatment. I love the "band history" quotes, too. when I saw Debbie Harry in #1 spot I fully expected Chrissie Hynde in #2 spot (simply because they are intertwined in my memory).
One that I would add is The Motels, lead singer Martha Davis. Songs include "Only the Lonely" "Suddenly Last Summer" and my fave, "Total Control" (amazing saxaphone solo).
Another thought. A song I associate with Joan Jett is "Cherry Bomb" but I think the more famous version is by The Runaways (don't know the lead singer tho).
Making me feel like a little headbanger over here. And that's a good thing! Thanks!! MM
Does Pat Benetar count or is she more of a solo artist?
Really liked this - a dramatic departure from your usual stuff - and it worked. Like somebody else above I was expecting Janis. The quotes that you found make for a great read and give you good links. I used to be a neighbour of Annie Lennox in Crouch End, London. She saw me once in the greengrocers but was restrained enough not to ask for my autograph.
When I grow up I want to be like Annie Lennox.
She's been my hero since I saw her and Dave Stewart at the Free Mandela Concert, or was it Live Aid? Maybe Live Aid
Excellent photo of Janis! The perfect list!
Chris...I think Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest female singers ever...there...call me square if you dare! :P
-Cris, if you're waiting for money from Google, don't hold your breath. I've been here a year now, and have never seen one cent from them.
I think this is a great looking hub, dude! The B&W's are a nice touch. I really like everyone listed - especially the little Irish singer from Cranberries. I saw a video of her her doing "Ave Maria" with Luciano Pavarotti during a Cranberries concert. Awesome!
I would have also included the little-known, and very under-rated, Portishead singer, Beth Gibbons.
Great hub! 16 and 3/4 thumbs up!
Well you have me favorites in there; Joan Jet and Janis Joplin. I believe Janis would have been one of the greatest blues singers of her age if she didn't destroy herslef.
GREAT CHOICES ! I agree with everyone of them, and as you know I'm a Radio guy, who actually is old enough to remember Janis when she was alive. Hope I don't start flashing back to Woodstock today :-)
Cris - Great list I love that women can rock!! I also like your dramatic and dark side as well. Keep em comin any way you want I will read them all!
Hey Cris! I'm glad you liked my "sexy" hub. It's one of the very first romantic themes I've ever written. I'm not great at it yet but working on it:) As others have commented here, I like your writing no matter what it's about! Hugs
cris-Good list and what I love as much is the way you put the whole thing together!Like the idea
You got some my favorites in there although I never heard of garbage. I will put on Fleetwood Mac today since the jingle is in my head now (Thanks a lot :-). "chaaaaaannnge will keep us together...running for the shadows.."
Great list. I will add one of my favorites which is Pat Benetar!
For shame, for shame... Forgetting Janis Joplin! Actually I can see how it happened, since people barely remember BB&THC, only JJ as a solo act.
Oh, and I *do* love the high heels and lips. Very sassy classy!
You listed ALL of my favorites. ALL of them. I just knew I'd have at least one to add, but you covered every one of them, and you did it so well Cris. I think your layout is good, and the quotes were very cool to read. What I really like are the links to the band histories. It allows me to choose what history I want to read without having to work around it if I don't want to know. Very smart. Same with having links to the songs. It's visibly more pleasing to look at a picture rather than a video. Just my opinion, and I like the way you did this.
Great job!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Heck I love all the artists you mentioned. my favourite has to be Blondie, got to stick with my sisters here
cris, the pain a guy has to go to , putting food on the table.
I can't argue against any of your choices, although one band I do like to listen to (and watch) is "The Corrs" . Three for the price of one, I ask you how good a bargain is that ? ( oh yeah there is a guy in there as well , have not got the faintest idea what he looks like ) ;-)
Hell yeah!
These girls can rock as hell! I especially love Gwen Stefanie, Evanescence, and the Garbage bands! Damn! Feels like its been a long time back on here since my laptop crash?! Glad to see half of your face?! ROLF! You look like you're fresh out of high school. :D
no problem, I hate having to miss out on all the great new hubs out here?! It stinks having to borrow someone elses laptop this time since mine crashed?!
Huh? Are you John or Jim? -_-You can tell I don't use the message center much?!
Hey Cris, this is a side of you that I have not seen before. I Love it! You have brought back many great memories for me. Now, I will go broke buying all these damn CDs. "Nice Hub."
It is actually sad that your list is so short. More women should start up bands and make the list as long as it would be if we were talking about men.
I visited this hub every night after work but didn't leave a comment immediately because I wanted to listen to the different rock bands first. The finest indeed! The singers are familiar. Of course, I'm not comparing these bands with our very own Filipino bands who also rock 'n rule, hahaha. Again, thanks for this gift of a hub. This can be a good hang-out on evenings and weekends for me aside from the symphonies and the works of Andres Segovia and the other classic masters.
Good list.
You and I have very different tastes, though Blondie is definitely tops, and Joan Jett pwns! I feel any list of female acts must include Sleater-Kinney, as well as Yeah Yeah Yeahs (female-fronted). Le Tigre, The Gossip, and of course Siouxie and the Banshees must also be considered.
I keep thinking of more -- Veruca Salt, The Breeders. Maybe I'll have to write my own hub on this subject.
I woulda thrown In Siouxsee from Siouxsee and the Banshees too . But Cris some absolutely excellent picks here .
Nice Cris, love the choices, the pics and the music! :)
Let me know if you ever figure out that "make money" part. lol!
Looks like a HIT to me baby...I must admit Fleetwood Mac is one of my favs. and I actually saw Joan in person as well as attended Live Stock..hee hee... so now you know my age, but you know my age anyway... I love 'Dreams'...all of them...especially about my Mother...and I even have dreams about you..sssshhhh also had a couple glasses of wine tonight hic hic...:O) Hugs
G-Maaaaaaa!!!!! hahahaha! here's to more wine :D
Oh guess who's got 400 coming up!!!
You rock Cris. Wouldn't change a thing. Loved the quotes too. Just a beautiful layout dude. Glad ya added Janis too.
great list cris, woulda wanted to see siouxie sioux of siouxie and the banshees but i guess she's pretty obsure and she's more new wave than rock hehehe...
Great list but I would have to include Paramore.
The only other one I could think of right off hand is Patty Smyth, remember Scandal? Warrior? Heck, she ALMOST became lead singer of Van Halen after David Lee Roth left. But anyway, really nice Hub, I love the layout!
You can really pick them! I love them all. Your layout is very smooth! I really like the lipstick and high heels...and the quotes! I found the quotes very cool.
I have to agree with your assessment...Shirley Mansen, Amy Lee, and Stevie Nicks rock! I can't think of another women that should be in the top list that you left out except...maybe Pat Benatar :)
Well done. No Jack off Jill? They were totally risque and dark. =P G|M
P.S.
Here's a link to one of my favorite songs by them with lyrics..
Anytime, hope you like. Awesome band. They disbanded in 2001/02. The singer has a new band called scarling.
haha..its actually...
scarling.
With a period. They have a definition on their official site. ;)
Its a different sound..more like a gothy radiohead or something.
Nice
yep deffiantly all great female bands great work
Glad the conversation's still spinning (like an old LP) over here!
Here are a few more from MM's memory bank:
Devinvyls ("When I think about you I touch myself") Lead singer I believe used to be a porn start. Christina Amphlett
Xene Cervenka lead singer of punk band "X" with John Doe.
Aimee Mann, lead singer of Til Tuesday
Also for your consideration: Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson of the funnest band in pop history, the B52s!!!
Great topic. Tons of reponses.
Pat Benatar. I've seen her concerts, met her. Absolutely a 10.
Cris,
I'm one of the biggest rock fans out there and I believe that you captured every single great female rock artist there ever was. I would have added only one, The great Dusty Springfield.
Cris,
I missed the title, but Actually Dusty fronted 2 bands. A band called "The Springfields" started by her brother, and her comeback with "The Pet Shop Boys" and one of the greatest rock tunes (IMO anyway)
"What Have I Done To Deserve This"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1TSbCDyYBY
These were not great bands but neither was Janis Joplin's Band, "Big Brother and the Holding Company" and many of these artists were much bigger in solo careers (ex: Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks)
On another note, excellent addition with Amy Lee. Many people would leave her out. She really rocks.
I absolutely love the song and video "Call Me When You're Sober"
Wow!! I didn't know that about Dusty Springfield being in Petshop Boys (which I briefly confused with Cornershop). I knew she was gay, but I didn't know she resurfaced in the 1980s.
So much to learn here on HP!
Yes Cris - But it was a repeated collaboration -
From The Pet Shop Boys on Wikipedia
"The continued success of "It's a Sin" was followed by the release of "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," on 10 August. Co-written with Allee Willis and also featuring Dusty Springfield on vocals, the single reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although the duo had wanted to release this track on their debut album already, they had been unable to track down Springfield and were reluctant to record it with any other female singer, despite their record company's suggestions. Springfield's manager finally contacted them in 1987, following the release of Please and towards the end of that year, she travelled to London to record "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" with them. It was the first track to be recorded for the duo's second album. Pet Shop Boys had been told that Springfield was "difficult" to work with and even that she could no longer sing; however, her performance on the track put any such concerns to rest and they began a collaboration with her, which lasted until the end of the decade. Included on their then forthcoming second album Actually, the song became a massive worldwide hit and resurrected Springfield's career, leading to her 1990 album, Reputation, on which Pet Shop Boys were major contributing producers. This duet was also the start of a series of collaborations with high profile musicians, going on throughout the band's career."
excellent hub, thaks for sharing this information and advice.

Hye Cris, first off, I watch VH1 Classic quite a bit and whenever Blondie is on...I get a funny feeling in my pants.
Anyway, I would put the Bangles on this list. I like "Walk Lik an Egyption" and Susanna Hoffs is HOT...even today. Also Lita Ford did her share of ass kicking with "Kiss me Deadly & Don't Close Your Eyes."
A couple new bands you shoud check out that have ass kicking rockin chick singers are Slunt, Damone & Flyleaf!
another one for The Cardigans. :) makes me remember your hub with the 'love me, love me'.
but i think Garbage is cooler! haha
There's a whole new generation of female fronted rock bands rising around the globe. Tarja Ternunun, now solo from Nightwish, Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil, and June Maun of Clandestine, along with Bands like Epica, Delain, Octavia Sperati, and more. The Genre isn't in past tense at all. 'DeX'
super hub.
u pipl rocking
nice list, but after the last decade i would have to include the yeah yeah yeahs with Karen O
cris
sorry im late to the party but i just stumbled on this hub about women rockers(a link on msn home page)like it alot, agree with your choices and other commenters, brings back teenage memories.
mm
runaways lead singer was/is cherie currie, a woman i would die to meet along w/jj btw they were the first all girl band(teens) that realy played instuments, those after i.e. the bangle, the gogos, bananarama, ect. owe homage to them. google joan jett or cherie currie, their web sites can explain it better than i.
more info:
there was a movie made last year called 'the runaways' starring kristen stewart from the twilight movies(she was joan to a t.,and dakota fanning as cherie(she looked more like herself w/a blond wig like cherie's hair. the movie is based on cherie's book 'neon angel-memoir of a runaway'
another btw- cherry bomb(the runaways best known song) was written by joan and the mgr. kim fowler in about 10 or 15 minutes for cherie when they auditioned her for the band, other band members were lita ford(surprise)lesser known jackie fox and drummer sandy west. joan re did it after going solo and added bomb sound effects at the end of the song. im just a big fan of joan and cherie as if you couldn't tell as much for their sex appeal as the music, so you should do another of these on all girl bands and sexy women in rock. i guise they go hand in hand for me lol

Dude, I know what you mean about taking another angle with your hub content. I played the dark, sad role for awhile but it sure felt good to come up with something similar to what you chose here. I'm not going to promote my own hubs, just wanted to say this is an awesome hub, great choices in women singers, I think Heart would be my number one:)
